Mr Owen Cur
tis MEd, BEd(P.E.), Dip PE, AEP, FAAESS

Owen has higher degree educational qualifications and has been a teacher-educator for the past 20 years. He has been heavily involved in developing the knowledge, skills and competencies required of an Exercise Physiologist, and has developed innovative educational processes for these emerging professionals. Owen played a major role in developing the profession and has been National Vice President of the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science and is a Fellow of that organisation.

Owen has worked collaboratively with the local community in developing strategic alliances for the benefit of the field of Exercise Science. Owen was awarded the Inaugural Vice Chancellor's Award for Community Engagement at the University of Wollongong in 2006 (UoW was voted Times Educational Supplement University of the Year for Community Engagement 2006) for his involvement with a wide range of community initiatives.  These initiatives have focused on projects benefiting the community by working with, among others, the local Divisions of General Practice, the Retirement Industry, Aboriginal Vascular Health, NSW Department of Health, the Federal Department of Health and Ageing.

Owen's professional work in the community has resulted in a significant number of projects which have yielded mutual benefit for both emerging professionals and individual service recipients. These projects have included: Renalrobics for people on dialysis; collaborative projects with local General Practitioners (GPEP) for individuals living with diabetes; the development and implementation of low intensity exercise interventions for people in supported care; post stroke activity interventions; and falls prevention in the elderly. These projects have provided Owen with particular insights into the way in which the current Health Care system can better support people with complex and chronic conditions, and in particular, how this support might be provided through the vehicle of 'self-management' for improved health outcomes.

Owen's expertise in establishing contexts of practice involving Allied Health Professionals and Higher Education is now a sought after resource for visioning and planning of strategic developments in the field of Exercise Science and Rehabilitation in Higher Education.
